Gameplay of Mungyodance 3 in action

Features[]

  • New Oni-mode like life system, based on the charts. Missing a note loses one live. You can gain lives by getting a combo that's a multiple of 50, or by completing a hold note. Starting a hold note but not completing it makes you lose 2 lives instead of the normal 2.
  • Extra Mode modsets for a lot of the new songs.
  • No evaluation system unlike its predecessors, instead displaying the number of correctly hit notes the player got. This number is not, as you might expect, tied to individual notes hit, but rather to the rows of notes (so hands, jumps and steps all count as a single point to the hit score).
  • A new, original unlock system. Playing three songs (or the same song three times) enters a sort of unlock mode, when songs able to be unlocked are playable. Will sometimes be replaced with text informing the player they can now play boss levels as well, unlocking both boss songs and normal unlockable songs.
  • 3D NoteSkin (the main one, all the others are 2D and unusable outside of specific Extra Mode modsets).
  • Multiple versions of a song listed under one song, known as EX songs, able to be played by selecting a high difficulty on a song that has an EX version. They are usually marked with the difficulty the EX version is for having an XXX placed after its name instead of the normal difficulty number.

Trivia[]

  • The game was originally meant to be released on May 24th, 2008 but way delayed by a month to June 24th, missing said deadline and being confirmed as releasing "sometime in July". It was eventually given a release date of August 24th, 2008 however managed to be released one day early.
  • The game is based on a modified version of Stepmania 3.9, codenamed 'mgd3.machete.final.1.0'.
  • Pressing F11 during gameplay reveals a message that reads: "Don't push that! :(". The function of pressing the button, on a normal Stepmania build, is to increase the offset during the song.
